Meet Steve Haskett who is a regular at the Avenue Vintage and Antique Market.
Tell us a bit about yourself Steve and what you have on your stall!
I have a wide selection of vintage and retro goods at the market including furniture, plant pots and other items. I also sell retro style original prints done by our Ealing born and bred son, artist Daniel Haskett. Daniel takes inspiration from old photos which helps bring out the retro feel of his work. In particular he likes Saul Leiter.
I’m a retired film and TV cameraman myself. My wife Andi and I went to the first ever market. We liked what we saw and enquired about a table as we had lot of vintage items to sell.
What’s your market day routine?
Living reasonably close by, we leave home at about 7.30 arriving at 8am to set up on market day. With there being two of us we can man the stall but also visit other stalls to chat and look at what’s for sale.
There’s a great sense of community amongst the traders which is one of the reasons we come back each month. It’s nice to meet people and chat about our stock, Daniel’s work and more even if they don’t end up buying.
What are your top tips for running a market stall?
Present the stall well and try not to overcrowd tables with stuff. Make sure you have the right clothing, particularly if it’s cold.
Tell us about your ‘star item’ for sale this month.
Our son Daniel has done a limited edition run of 50 x 70cm Screen Prints with a tropical theme which we will sell on the stall.
